I decided to go with my own router rather than rent one. I ordered this from Amazon: https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-network ... er-be3600/.

It looks different from other mesh routers I've seen pictured (which don't seem to have external antennae), but it is supposed to be Easy-Mesh compatible and I can add other nodes as needed. I live in a small apartment - less than 1000 sq ft, so I think the one router will be sufficient, and I'll add additional nodes later if I need them.)

Let me know if this kind of router works, or if it's less-than-optimal and there's another type that I should get. I can return the one that I ordered to Amazon if it's the wrong kind.

I don't know this particular router but i don't see why it would not work.
What service are you getting from sonic? 10 Gbps fiber/1 Gbps fiber/VDSL?
They would all work.
This device has 2.5Gbps ethernet WAN port. the 10Gbps service 622v ONT would have a 2.5/10 Gbps port so you would be able to use it at its optimal speed.

Also a reminder that if you use your own device, you need to return the old one to sonic. You won't pay rent on the device but also you may be charged if you need Sonic to come to your location for something that is related to your inside wiring. Also, as it's your device, they will not send a replacement it if it fails (duh).

I should have clarified - this will be for new service, so I don't have old Sonic equipment that I need to return. I think it's 10Gbs fiber service that I'm getting - I think that's the default for new installations in my area. (I'm in Oakland, CA.) I realize I won't be getting the full 10Gbs since I didn't buy a 10 Gbps router (those are still pretty expensive), but hope to get the somewhere in the vicinity of the maximum speed that this router will provide. I should also note - I sometimes will use a direct ethernet connection into the LAN port when I really need to maximize speed. I have an Ethernet to USB-C adapter for that purpose.

Hello!

Yes, the router above should work with our service but I would highly recommend going with eero if you are looking at a mesh network. They are pretty user friendly to set up and my personal favorite router.

Best Wishes!

I looked at Eero - the price-speed ratio was a lot better with the TP-Link Archer series. Admittedly, Archer has more settings and is a little less 'plug-in and forget it' than Eero or the TP-Link Duro routers, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
