Will Sonic upgrade DSLAMs to VDSL2? (if not already done?)

I'm afraid matters have reached the breaking point for me. I'll be moving in a few weeks, to a house that already has Fusion (at my recommendation, no less), but is a bit further away from the CO and only getting about 4.5 Mbps (vs. my blazing 7 on a good day).

DSLx qualifies 18 Mbps VDSL2 at the new address today for $35/month less and double the performance of Sonic X2 service - which is the best you've got. So unless there's some change in your offerings within about 3 weeks, we'll be switching the new place over to a slightly more modern, and much faster and cheaper technology. I get that there are issues with deploying new stuff, etc, etc, but the promises have been going for years now, and I've reached the end of my patience. Sad.

VDSL is a protocol that can run off of Sonic or AT&T gear. Most Fusion customers are currently on ADSL2+ equipment, though we have been deploying VDSL-capable gear for a little while now and have been turning up some circuits on that new equipment.

Fusion FTTN is a service we're rolling out in the near future that uses a variety of means (including VDSL) to deliver Internet connections through AT&T-owned equipment.

In some cases placing a Fusion FTTN order will result in the same kind of connection that placing a legacy ADSL order would have (that is to say the equipment serving that location is old-fashioned ADSL gear), in which case there would be no increase in speeds compared to the existing circuit. If I recall correctly I ran a prequalification through the FTTN system and this was the case for your location.

You guys should really put together an infographic that explains all this. Many of us on the forums understand the details, but for anyone else it's rather confusing. It would also save your sales/support people some time as a reference tool.

Worse yet, it seems that many of the sales and support staff don't understand it either. Just last week at least one employee in sales was insisting that VDSL wasn't available for my friend signing up in San Francisco, even though it is what was ultimately activated.

I think we're past the 6 month estimate on full VDSL2 roll out. Are we still at the phase where we will be notified once the upgrade is available on our line? We should not go ahead and contact support to try to get it set up, correct?

Tools for ADSL2+ to VDSL2 upgrades are almost complete.

As far as I can tell, they don't even have their VDSL available in every CO yet. If I check an address here in Burlingame that's 2,000ft or closer, it still only offers the 20Mbps ADSL2+ speed estimate.

Yes, the interfaces still being rolled out. We have completed all of the large and high-run-rate COs in Northern CA, but we still have over 100 COs still pending.

Hello Dane,

Now that I've been upgraded to FTTN (still waiting for the number porting), I believe you had stated in a previous message that I would see a speed increase in the next several months. With all the letters flying around (ADSL2/Dslams/etc.) can someone at Sonic tell me EXACTLY what I have? How far I am away from the CO/VRAD/RT?? and if you misspoke about the speed increase for my connection or if there are more advancements in the short-term?

You will get a speed increase from FTTN but no benefit from VDSL2.

The confusion is with the nomenclature and assumption on how allenk is receiving his service.

Allenk has stated he has legacy ADSL1 and gets 6 Mbps. Based on his speed, it is very likely he is being served from a remote terminal (RT), and generally implies he is too far away from a CO. He can migrate away from ADSL1 in 2 ways. Fusion off the CO or from a VRAD through resold AT&T U-verse (FTTN, which would also be VDSL2--thus the confusion). From a CO, one can subscribe to ADSL2+ or upcoming VDSL2 (again, the cause for confusion). If allenk is too far from the CO--very likely--then VDSL2 won't provide any increase than what he has now, and will likely give him a decrease in speed. The only alternative is resold U-verse since VRADs tend to be closer to homes.
