Dane,

Here's a weird twist:

This afternoon, I got a robo-call from ATT asking if I'd like to pay my phone bill, which just HAPPENS to fall due on December 25th (the day after Sonic says our number should finally be ported over).

FYI, we have NEVER received any such contact from ATT in the past 45 years.

I hung up on the call because we had already paid the bill (although our check, mailed to ATT on Dec 11th, hasn't yet been cashed). But now I wonder if the unusual delay in porting our number was deliberately planned by ATT in order to keep our telephone account active through the final day of our billing period, so that they wouldn't owe us a refund. Perhaps they even hoped we'd pay for the next month of service (which we shouldn't need, once we're cut loose by the porting over).

HOWEVER -- If the porting over fails on December 24 -- and since we have not paid ATT for the month's service that would begin on December 25 -- what happens then? Will we have NO telephone service from Christmas Day onward?

Is this a reasonable concern? Or has this exhausting process made me completely paranoid….?

My two cents, eavesdropping: you've made the right choice, and being done with AT&T is magnificent.

A heads-up, if still applicable... when I switched to Fusion a few years ago, AT&T proxies started calling & leaving messages, incessantly, to get me back - they call this "retention" - until at some point I found the right number to finally demand they put me on their internal do-not-call list (being on the national one was irrelevant). The AT&T number I finally found for this, in their "farewell" letter, was 1-866-848-0588. It worked. Don't know if that's still the working number, or even if they still bug people like this.

They don't like rejection, and assume you didn't really mean it.

Given that your switch wasn't as simple as usual, plus the robo-call you describe, I thought I'd pass this along and remove one more little surprise, just in case, which you can take care of with AT&T (this was out of Sonic's hands) much sooner than I did.

Hopefully a friendly Sonic customer service rep will see this thread and put that number in the knowledgebase in case others encounter the same problem. ;-)
