Is there a way to send a large (60mg) file to my client. I understand there are companies that provide such a service (ftp?), but I would prefer to use Sonic.net if possible.

I've used YouSendIt and Dropbox for this purpose. PC Magazine has a brief article with a few suggestions too: http://www.pcworld.com/article/217247/s ... files.html

YouSendIt is integrated into the latest versions of Thunderbird. When using T-bird, one attaches the large file in the same manner as any other attachment, and T-bird recognizes the file is large and suggests YouSendIt instead. It also makes it easy to sign up for the free account.

Definitely some system (like that one) where the file is not actually in the email but can be clicked on to get it. Most email accounts have a size limit on incoming emails.

You could also put the file in your webspace on Sonic then email a link to your client so they can download it thru their browser. You dont have to put the file on a webpage for the link to work, so you dont have to worry about someone else getting it.

Mediafire is another service you can use for this purpose, and has a feature available where the link provided is one-use-only, can expire after a set time, and sends you an email notification when the file is accessed.

Which strikes me as a bit of overkill, but hey.

You can determine how large an outgoing message can be by telnetting to your server and issuing an EHLO command. Same with the recipient's server.

Code: Select all

-bash-4.1$ telnet mail.sonic.net 25
Trying 64.142.7.162...
Connected to mail.sonic.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail.sonic.net ESMTP Ready on Mon, 5 Aug 2013 10:24:19 -0700 [a.mail]
EHLO sonic.net
250-a.mail.sonic.net Hello id0022.vps.sonic.net [69.12.217.213], pleased to meet you
250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
250-PIPELINING
250-8BITMIME
250-SIZE 30000000
250-DSN
250-ETRN
250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN
250-STARTTLS
250-DELIVERBY
250 HELP
The "size" line tells me that the total message size mail.sonic.net is willing to deal with (as of a moment ago) was 30000000 bytes, 30 megabytes.

I try again with one of gmail's servers and get the following:

Code: Select all

-bash-4.1$ telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25
Trying 173.194.79.26...
Connected to gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mx.google.com ESMTP sr9si381526pab.96 - gsmtp
EHLO sonic.net
250-mx.google.com at your service, [69.12.217.213]
250-SIZE 35882577
250-8BITMIME
250-STARTTLS
250 ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
It looks like they will accept messages up to 35882577 bytes, a little under 36 megabytes.

Ah, google has increased their limit (somewhat) recently - last I checked it was 25GB. We'll probably increase ours to match.
