new Fusion line (~10.5k feet) but only getting ~1Mbps down

Had my in-laws migrate to Fusion from their existing AT&T/DSL Extreme set up and the switch happened yesterday morning. I swung by to replace the old modem with the new Sonic (Pace) unit and then ran a couple of tests using speedtest.sonic.net....I was barely getting 1Mbps download speeds (and it was very spastic..the speedtest "needle" was bouncing up and down during the downstream test vs. sticking near 1Mbps).

A short talk with tech support netted another ~0.2 Mbps download (though still bouncy on the download test). He said there wasn't anything that jumped out at him as far as line issues go.

The sonic prequal shows 10,646 ft. According to the speed/distance chart at that distance the line should be getting roughly 4 Mbps download.

I went outside to look at the demarc and was expecting to find a NID & a test jack, but it's one of the old style spark gap connection points (eg. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Demarc2.JPG ) that doesn't have a test jack. Is this a potential source of noise/performance suck? Is replacing it with a NID something that can be done by an experienced DIY-er, or is this something that Sonic can do (and what $)?

My first troubleshooting step was going to be to connect the modem to the test jack, but I'd need a test jack to connect to first :)

Any other suggestions? Trying to eliminate potential issues in the house & getting the speed to something more respectable before considering other broadband options for them. (This is the 3rd family member I've moved to sonic & the other 2 have been issue free :( )

You should be able to get that old DMark replaced with a proper NID. Call support and ask them to contact AT&T to have it replaced. It's NOT a DYI project.

Edit: Oh, AT&T should do that without a fee.
