Harmony Hub + Alexa: requires UPnP...I think

Ok, so I'm pretty sure I have a UPnP issue as discussed in this post
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3052

info:
- 25Mbps FTTN service
- Amazon Alexa Echo Dot devices, works properly and can access the internet just fine
- Harmony Hub+Companion, works properly on its own within the internal network, does not work as a smart home device with Alexa

I found this in the system requirements for the Harmony Hub:
https://support.myharmony.com/en-us/system-requirements

UPnP does not have to be enabled for the Harmony app to discover and interact with the hub; however it does have to be enabled for the hub to discover and properly work with other devices on your network such as Philips hue, Sonos, Nest, Roku or Smart TVs.

I am guessing I need UPnP for the hub to go outbound to the internet so that the Alexa service can find it. Is there any workaround or should I just buy a new wireless router and use that instead of the AT&T issued router?

If you can find out what port number is being opened with UPnP you should be able to manually set port forwarding for the Harmony Hub and it should work the same.
