Is it possible to run a ruby on rails application on the shared hosting service?

Thanks

It is possible, but Ruby isn't running natively on our servers, it's running interpreted, so speed will be slow at best. We don't support fastcgi, so if it's using that, there will be problems. What I can recommend, is either our Custom Hosting, which provides you a virtual server running Linux, or you can lease a server from us (https://signup.sonic.net/1u/).

I have also been interested in hosting a Ruby on Rails application for a while. I tried without success to get it to run (I am no expert, unfortunately) - I got the idea that some combination of Ruby/Rails/Gems were older versions and that was causing me trouble.

The custom hosting solution sounds great, but I assume there is some cost involved? It's just an application that I want to run for myself, but be able to access from wherever I am, without running a local virtual machine. I'm not really willing to dump much monthly cost into it. If it was possible to run Ubuntu as the virtual server, that would be an additional selling point for me...

Thanks.

The price for Custom Hosting is about mid-way between our Basic Hosting and cheapest leased servers. We currently are running Scientific Linux 6, a free branch of Redhat Linux, as OpenVZ "virtual containers" on our Custom Hosting server - so you'd be getting all the capabilities of our standard hosting and shell access, plus the ability to run more complex applications such as those based on Rails.

bumping this. I just signed up for the free web hosting and ssh access. I was hoping to get a Ruby on Rails app up and running but there's only an outdated version of ruby and a crippled version of rails and rubygems. :((

Unfortunately, the version of Ruby on the current shell server and web servers is on the older side. The operations team is currently experimenting with Ruby, so it's very likely we will add newer versions and support once the servers are upgraded.

Hi -- I am also interested in running a Ruby on Rails application (Redmine, specifically). I'm a very satisfied current Fusion customer, and would really love to purchase my hosting from Sonic.net as well, but the ability to run a RoR application (with the RoR environment mostly current and updated) is a prerequisite for me.

Just throwing my support behind the cause :-)

Keep up the great work, Sonic.net team!
