A few days ago I had Sonic installed.

Today I purchased a new network card to allow for the Gigabit.

But on my directly connected PC I still have 95/95 (Dell Inspiron 620, 2011).

Is is something with the motherboard that it cannot accept higher speed?

Or is it something else?

I would appreciate your advice,

Paul

Hi Paul,

It sounds like you might need to mandate your NIC to negotiate at 1Gb/s full duplex, I'm guessing it's set at 100Mb/s currently. You can check if this is the case by going to control panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Adapter Settings. Then double click on your Network - a bunch of information will be displayed, one of which will be "Speed". If it reports 100Mb/s then it's not configured for 1Gb/s and you'll need to change the configuration manually.

To make that change do the following:

1. Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings
2 .Right click on the appropriate Local Area Connection and click Properties.
3. Click Configure.
4. Go to the Link Speed tab, and in the Speed and Duplex section, select 1.0Gbps full duplex, and click okay.

I wonder Andrew if you you would post instructions for a mac computer to mandate NIC to negotiate at 1GB full duplex. The instructions above are for windows. thanks.

Apologies for the delay in my response to your request, I've been out of the office a couple of days. To check and then mandate 1Gb/s on OS X you should do the following:

1.) Browse to Applications > Utilities > Network Utility
2.) On the Info tab, link speed will be displayed.
3.) Ensure in the dropdown menu that the statistics for the appropriate network interface are being displayed.

And if the Link Speed is at 100Mb/s then do the following:

1.) Apple > System Preferences > Network
2.) In Network Connections, select Ethernet
3.) Click Advanced > Hardware > Configure then choose Manually.
4.) In the Speed menu choose 1000baseT.
5.) Check to make sure Duplex is set to full-duplex, and MTU is set to standard (1500).

That should be it!

thanks andrew for your response. I see on my computers that the max speed in speed/ duplex section is 100mbs and not possible to change to 1gb for fiber. Do you think I will be able to get up to 100mbs speed when I get fiber or will the computer not handle the new speed and maybe I should think about a new computer. my computer is prob 5 years old. thanks.

Andrew's out of the office at the moment, but I can say there's a good chance you'd get 100mb/s speed from that computer on fiber. A lot depends on the hardware and software your computer is running, but for a computer only 5 years old, I'd be surprised if you weren't able to get 100mb.
