Atherton has started down the road toward offering residents the fastest Internet service available nationwide for free, Mayor Rick DeGolia said Wednesday.

DeGolia said requests for information were sent to 10 Internet providers last July to see who might be interested in providing a fiber network to Atherton.

"There was no interest," he said. "Atherton is a small town -- only 7,000 residents and about 2,500 homes -- so it's not as targeted as a place like Palo Alto or Cupertino. So we will do it ourselves."

The most surprising thing about this is that Atherton is actually building anything. Don't worry though, they'll find a way to completely mismanaged the project.
