Thunderbird Error When Sending Batch Emails

Hi,

When I try to send even 20 emails together, then I get the following error message:

An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: 4.3.2 Connection rate limit exceeded..

The limitation is way too low when even 20 emails cannot be sent as a batch. Any idea how this can be resolved?

Thanks,
Mehrdad

Can you describe how you are sending these batch messages?

Hi Kelsey,

I use Thunderbird templates in order to send the same response to a batch of emails that I have received. Basically, I put all the emails that I want to respond to (I keep the number of emails to respond to at any given time to less than 25), then I select a template to be applied to as response to all of them. Other than choosing the template which I do manually, the rest is done by Thunderbird automatically.

So, yes, Thunderbird sends all the responses in a short time, but given the number is so low, then the server should not have any problem. If I was trying a 100 or 200 emails, then I would not complain about it; but any ISP that I've been with easily allowed up to 5o email in short burst.

Thanks,
Mehrdad

Mehrdad, are you using an extension to do this? One possible solution is to use the "Send Later" feature which will cause Thunderbird to queue the messages locally in the outbox and then send them all on a single connection to the mail server later. This is the typical behavior you'd see from a client that was sending messages in bulk.

We may be able to increase our thresholds, there's always a balance to be struck between reasonable limits which help prevent DoS attack scenarios and that which limits reasonable use. Typically, many connections/second from a single client is a very good indication of a owned system that is sending spam.

Hi Kelsey,

I simply use Thunderbird's templates and filters, and the 'Send Later' addon does not work when email is being sent by the filters.

This seems to be getting worse and worse. I just tried to send a batch of 7 emails and I had 4 popups with the error that I had mentioned in my original message. All ISPs have to deal with spammers and abuse of the system, but I've never seen such restricted configuration. Up to 2 month ago, at least I had no problem as long as I kept the number of emails in a batch under 20; now it seems that I have to send emails one by one. That is just not acceptable. It is costing me money and opportunity big time.

Thanks,
Mehrdad

Mehrdad, I'm made some adjustments the the connection rate throttling that should help alleviate this problem for you. It is unfortunate that Thunderbird does not optimize this by allowing it to send all of the messages at the end of the batch action.
