iPad iOS 5 mail refuses to send

I have an original iPad running iOS 5. Long ago in Mail I setup my sonic.net account using IMAP and it has been working great for years. However, recently Mail started to refuse to send anything, as in, attempting to send an email from my sonic.net account results in an infinitely spinning "Sending..." status that eventually fails with the message:

Cannot Send Mail
The connection to the outgoing server "mail.sonic.net" failed.

Retrieving mail still works okay. I've checked the outgoing mail server account settings against those listed in the online setup guides at https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/IOS_5_%26_6_Mail_Setup. I've deleted all email accounts, totally reset the iPad, and added back only my sonic.net account. iOS Mail still fails to send.

All the Macs in our house using everything from Mac OS 10.4.11 to 10.10.1, with all sonic email accounts setup using IMAP, have no problems sending email.

What's going on with iOS 5? Are sonic's outgoing mail servers refusing SSL connections from iOS 5?

Thanks,
Bill

Im in the same boat, Bill.
But I lost the ability to send email way back in Feb. 2014.
I haven't been able to find the solution, yet.

another odd thing is, I can still send from my yahoo account.

The only solution that works for me is to turn off SSL for the outgoing mail server mail.sonic.net. SSL is still enabled for incoming server imap.sonic.net. The only way to guarantee security is to enable VPN to sonic first, which I always do when traveling and connecting to hotel or other "unknown" networks. But at home it's a nuisance.
