PHP contact form error

I am trying to trouble shoot a PHP contact form made using Dreamweaver. The tutorial asks me to verify if Sonic hosts on linux servers using PHP and enabled PHP SMTP access for the mail()?

I asked Tech support but they said this beyond their training and to try here.
