I opened a support ticket #2832746 regarding some problems I am having going to TLS email submissions at sonic.net
before the September 16th date. I submitted the ticket on September 5th.

I updated the ticket with more information on September 6th.

After getting no response, I called the support line last night and ended up having them call me
back at 8am this morning.

I spoke with Nick who said that I needed to direct my question here.

I will admit that I am using a downrev version of postfix+sasl (2.2.10) from an older ubuntu 6.06LTE system.

It would be nice to resolve this before I lose outbound email connectivity to sonic.net.

I do have a sonic.net provided static IP address if that helps me be able to use any other kind of mechanism.

I took a look in the ticket and there is no indication that postfix attempted to authenticate based on the logs you've provided. Is is possible that however SASL is configured that it doesn't want to use PLAIN/LOGIN methods? Gmail also provides XOAUTH,XOAUTH2 and PLAIN-CLIENTTOKEN. That's the only obvious difference that I see.

Hints on what I should be setting in the main.cf file for postfix would be wonderful to have.
fwiw: I do not see an saslauthd file on my system. Attempts to use 'apt-get install sasl2-bin'
fail with 404 Not Found for most IP addresses in the /etc/sources.list file.

Sorry, I have zero experience with postfix. I assume that you've done something similar to this but with out hostnames?

Yes. I have an

smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl/sasl_passwd

with appropriate entry for '[mail.sonic.net]:587 mdb:PASSWORD'

I would like to ask what alternatives (if any) may exist given that I have a static IP address.

I'm afraid that a static ip address has no affect on this policy. Have you tried asking for assistance on a postfix list?
