Landline not ringing last night?

Oddity: family have been traveling for weeks and frequently calling home. Last night (haven't checked again this morning) the landline phones never rang at all -- the travelers phoned repeatedly and their calls always seemed to ring like no one was home, then went to voicemail.

I was here the whole time; the ringers are turned up and quite audible.

This happened once a few years ago briefly, I remember. Anything known about it?

Same problem again this morning --- our ringers are turned on; the landline Fusion phone rings when we dial it from a cell phone here.

But we'd been waiting on a call from someone using a cell in an Oregon area code -- picked up the phone, got the message waiting beep, and it turns out they'd phoned the house half an hour ago. But the phone here didn't ring.

Is there a way to test this?
