EMail forwarding...

Hi,

My primary email client is GMail. I have no wishes to change this. So my question is how does one set up automatic forwarding of all email I receive through Sonic to go to my GMail account?

Sonic.net prefers that you use GMail's ability to fetch mail from your box.

Back when atmail was available, I was able to forward from there, but neither Sonic.net's new web mail nor SquirrelMail have access to do that. I'll probably have to call support if/when I need to stop forwarding.

SO I set that up via GMail rather than a filter here then?

Yes, in GMail settings, "Accounts and Import" tab, "Check mail from other accounts (using POP3)" section.

Be sure to set up for *sending* email to use the Sonic.net SMTP server, or some people will see "From <gmail address> on behalf of <sonic.net address> when they receive email from you.

Or better yet, go to member tools, select Email -> Forwarding & Autoresponse. A dialog will open to allow you to set up mail forwarding and select whether you want the mail to remain in the inbox or remove it after forwarding.

I'd actually recommend against forwarding mail. It is much better for you to use whatever client you choose, including gmail, to grab your mail off our servers using POP or IMAP.

Well, I've been using this way for a long while but you know when you haven't set something up for years, which it's been that long as I've been with AT&T internet services for literally 10 years and of course they set up a Yahoo account as part of the package dealio and at the time it was so spam laden I opted for GMail, that's what got me started with GMail! Their spam filter is one of the best out there IMHO!! So in time all my mail that was being sent to the Yahoo mail account was slowly switched over to GMail but there were a few that were specific to Yahoo mail so it was nice to have it forwarded over using the set up using the tools that Yahoo supplied. So using the Sonic tools works just fine for my needs.

May I ask why you think that doing it the other way around is better?

Forwarding email causes problems for SPF/DKIM and DMARC and can lead to legitimate mail being lost as well as your provider having to manage issues, like being identified as a SPAM source because you're forwarding all of a customers email to them, SPAM included. You can also end up with mail loops and similar problems.

Hmm, never had that happen to me! I'll keep as is for now. If it happens I'll look into switching to GMail doing that for me instead of your server. Thanks for the heads up.
