Error Turning on Remote Access on Netgear WGR614v9 Router

Need help.

I recently swapped out my Sonic modem/router with a TP-Link TD-8817 DSL modem paired with a Netgear WRG614v9 router.

When I was using AT&T's DSL and modem, my Netgear router was able to have its remote access turned on. Now with the above combination, when I go to turn on remote access, I receive the following error message:

The specified port(s) are being used by other configurations. Please check your configurations of Remote Management, Port forwarding, Port Triggering, UPnP Port Mapping table, RIP, and Internet connection type

I keep thinking that some setting is wrong on my TD-8817 modem which is confusing my Netgear Router. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I can provide all my modem settings if that helps.

You need to put the modem into bridge mode and try again, the error should be resolved. The modem should have come with instructions for configuration and the user guide is available online as well: http://www.tp-link.com/resources/docume ... 010897.pdf

PVC0 , VPI/VCI 0/35 , UBR , IPv4 , Bridge Mode > Save

Thanks for the reply. At this point, I'll take any advice.

I did change to bridge mode. The setting that worked is in the attached JPEG file.

However, it didn't resolve my Remote Access error. Still getting the same error message.

You didn't put the modem into bridge mode, you have the same problem; when the TD-8817 DSL modem is not in bridge mode it is acting as a router as well. Change the settings on PVC0 to VPI 0 VCI 35 and under ISP select "Bridge Mode" then be sure to save and apply these changes. In this configuration the TD-8817 will not bind to the Sonic provided IP address but will pass this through to the next device connected (ultimately your router). For testing I would recommend using your computer connected to the modem directly via ethernet and see if you can get an IP address (If your computer normally connects to your router via DHCP you should be able to do this without changing any settings on your computer). When the modem is in bridge mode your router will have a public facing IP address and you will be able to reach your remote administration interface. TD-8817 using Bridge Mode Settings. Thanks for all the help. I figured out my problem. In my initial setup using TP-Link's wizard, I had initially set up the TD-8817 to use Dynamic IP. I then changed the settings to Bridge Mode. Although my modem clearly showed it as in Bridge Mode, it obviously was not. I did a factory reset of the modem and then chose Bridge Mode from the wizard and used the following settings: [attachment=0]TD-8817 using Bridge Mode Settings.jpg

It didn't like VPI=0, VCI=35 when using Bridge Mode. Those two settings worked for Dynamic IP Mode though.

Then disabled DCHP and voila, was able to turn on Remote Access on my Netgear Router.

However, now I'm unable to login to my TD-8817 Modem. I assume that's because it's in real bridge mode. Is that correct?

Indeed, however you can log in by setting your computer's IP address statically and then connecting the pc directly to the modem via ethernet. From the manual linked above: "The default IP address of the TD-8817 ADSL2+ Ethernet/USB Modem Router is 192.168.1.1. and the default Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0." Use 192.168.1.1 as your gateway and set your pc address as 192.168.1.2, then open your browser and go to 192.168.1.1 to access the TD-8817 interface.

Sorry for the dumb follow-up question, but can you give me directions on how to set my computer's IP statically to equal 192.168.1.2?

Also, how to I set 192.168.1.1 as my gateway?

Unless you consider yourself to be low-risk, it's not recommended turning on Remote Access to the router without a update to the firmware. However, with Netgear that could mean the Remote Access hack getting fixed, but something else breaking. In other words, don't change the firmware and don't use Remote Access.

A better solution, but not always practical alternative to setting a modem/router into Bridge Mode, is turning the, in this case, Netgear into a wired Access Point to expand your wireless. For example, the TP-Link could provide wireless coverage at one end of the home and the Netgear at the other end, both providing addition LAN ports.
