Gigabit Fiber Upload speed gotten significantly slower since Apr 18 2025 (San Francisco)

I have had Sonic Gigabit Fiber (Mission District, San Francisco) since 2018. Overall, has worked great.I have been consistently getting 900+ Mbps download *AND* upload (as measured by speedtest.net)

But something has happened recently. I have a cron job that runs the speedtest CLI program and logs the upload/download speeds.

From those logs, I can tell that since Apr 18 2025, the upload speeds have gone down significantly. Since that day, I am only getting anywhere from 200 to about 500 Mbps upload speeds. Download works fine.

Anybody else seeing this issue?

Hello,

Thank you for posting here so we can help you with this. It's very common for speed tests to not show your full advertised bandwidth, as several factors can contribute to a lower result than your plan, including: network congestion, your device's capabilities, router limitations, and even the specific speed test platform you use; essentially, a speed test provides a snapshot of your connection at that moment, which might not reflect the maximum potential speed under ideal conditions.

This also explains why you can see the full speed only sometimes, but the test results will never be the same twice. What we'll want to know is if you are having trouble uploading anything or if it takes much longer to do so. When you upload a file, does it take a long time, or is it still near instantaneous? Rather than a speed test result, watch your upload file transfer speed and let us know if there is a problem there. If this is impacting your activity on the network, we'll certainly want to know about it. If it's just a number you are looking for, it will vary. Sometimes wildly, but that is normal. I hope this information helps. Take care.

Jeff, thanks for the reply.

I do understand your point.

However,
I have had a cron job running daily, which runs the "speedtext.exe" program every day, and logs the download and upload speeds. This test is run on a computer connected to the router with Ethernet.

I have been consistently (every single day) seeing download and upload speeds of 900-970 Mbps. EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Until April 18th. Since then, every day, the upload numbers have been significantly lower.

I cant really answer your question about if I am noticing any actual slowness of my uploads, as I dont really upload an large files, usually,

My question was more about what has changed that affects the number reported by speedtest.exe ?

For example here is today's result:
https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/8892 ... 7f8391190d
Download 936.42
Upload 296.17

And here is the result from Apr-17
https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/e5e8 ... 6aadc316d6
Download: 948.20
Upload 938.45

I've also experienced this result as well. On the 26th I installed a new router which explains the uptick for DL reaching advertised speeds, but on the 18th, there's a dramatic drop from the consistant speeds I was capturing for the past 30 day average of tests every hour.

When sharing the speedtest results it would be very helpful if included what server was used. Coincidentally we've replaced both of our old ookla speedtest servers - which had been running on vms - with physical hardware with 100Gbe. Our server in Santa Rosa was replaced on the 18th, and the San Jose server was replaced on the 22nd.

While the new hardware has significantly more resources and should not, by all accounts, be what's resulting in reduced performance but it's possible something isn't configured or working as expected.

Can you select both of these servers and a few others to compare too? Just sharing the text results is fine.

All of my data tracked was for the Santa Rosa server since that's the one that was chosen automatically.

I've applied some changes to our new speedtest servers which should result in *much* better speeds. When you have a moment, can you please check again and report your results?

Your average latency during upload are very high. Are you using your own gateway?

Here is a test from a VM limited to 1 Gb.
