WordPress won't install on subdirectories that are domains

I have been trying to install WordPress on domain which is really just a subdirectory. It is one domain out of 3 on my client's user directory (I'm signed in on his account :D ) and that pun was so intentional.

At first I was trying to install WP on the domain and just getting a general error "Can't install on this directory, try another". Then I tried installing it on the root with the subdirectory name for my domain and got:
Subdirectory names can only contain letters, numbers, underscores and dashes.
So there are 3 hosted domains and they are all on the root "mini" Sonic "page" (Basic Hosting per domain), and these domains are subdirectories named after the domain, including the .com and all. Programmers, notice a problem? There is a period in there. So what to do now?

I'm inheriting this. I am assuming Sonic named these subdirectories to correspond with the domains so I'm not touching that, but they told me to get help from the forum.

Thanks for any help!

Support said I can use member tools to change the name of the sub directory to something else, they say the period is not needed. SO I did that, but I am still not seeing a difference. FYI.

Jen,

If you want to install Wordpress (using https://members.sonic.net/websites/addons/wordpress/) for each of the domains, you'll want to pick the proper domain in the options, then leave the folder/subfolder option after the '/' blank.

The installer will complain if there's an existing index.html file, so you'll want to make sure the hosting directory is set properly. (see https://members.sonic.net/websites/hosting/dir/)

Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks for your answer Joe, I appreciate your time.

I'm trying to do the "one click" Sonic install as directed on https://member.sonic.net/thedirectory/ and it still isn't working. I am getting the non-specific error still ("pick another directory").

I am thinking attempt manual install next. The issue is that I do not manage the main domain (https://member.sonic.net/), and it wasn't set up with a websites folder : ( inherited and all that.

I haven't done a manual WP install on a subdirectory before.
But I also have never made a PHP/SQL/JavaScript site on Sonic's servers before. I'm not sure how much access or help I'm going to be able to find here.

The manual WP install is done, but I am getting a message that the server is running "PHP version 4.4.9 but WordPress 3.8 requires at least 5.2.4."
Found answer here: https://wiki.sonic.net/wiki/Php5
Still wondering why I have to set all this up if there is a "1 click install" that is supposed to work.

I tested the one click installer as user stuppin and successfully installed word press in a directory named test (I removed it afterwards). Sorry for the inconvenience, please let us know if you need any assistance (as I see your manual installation is complete). Thanks for choosing Sonic.net!
