Sonic's Webmail is a very useful service. It can even serve as a primary email "app" when you are aware of a few quirks (such as long search times when including the message Body). Having used webmail extensively for many years, I have noticed a few minor interface issues. None of these break functionality, but they do make the end user experience a little more difficult. I have identified each as a "fix" or "new feature". Please note that everything below is related to using Webmail via desktop browser.

1. Group email:

1a. Visual indicator of group email: (new feature)
[NOTE: This section was edited Jan 3, 2025]

When viewing an email preview (if mailbox Layout is set to either "Desktop" or "Widescreen"), it is difficult to know if there are multiple recipients unless you manually check (or view the email in a new window or double-click it from the List view). Only the Subject, From and Date are shown. There is no default indicator and the "Reply All" button is always available, so that does not help. You must expand the primary message headers to see the To: and CC: recipients (the small triangle in top, left corner next to the avatar icon and Subject). This must be done each time you sign in to Webmail, as the default is to NOT expand this information.

The current Webmail UI needs a small indicator of multiple recipients in the default, condensed email header. This would be some kind of indicator/icon to highlight an email that has multiple recipients in To/CC (or perhaps does not have an addressee in the To: field). This could be in the form of a text notation such as, "5 Recipients".

(Minor visual issue: When the primary headers are expanded, the To: and CC: labels are vertically centered, which introduces the possibility of recipients being seen as in the wrong group. This could be corrected by placing the To/CC labels at the top of their section, so they are aligned with the first row of recipients.)

1b. Viewing all headers in a group email: --DELETED--

(I removed this entry which had to do with viewing the full headers with numerous X-Spam, and routing lines via the top, right triangle.)

2. Search Status: (cosmetic fix)

When searching within Webmail, if you include the Body in your search the resulting time can take much longer than simply searching headers. Time can also increase with larger mailboxes, or the more mailboxes you include in your search. While there is a notation within the Search pop-up interface (top, right corner of Webmail), it would be helpful to modify the "Searching ..." pop-up (lower, right corner) to add a note about longer search times. This would provide a persistent reminder to those less-familiar with using Search as to why it might appear nothing is happening.

3. Webmail Filters:
https://webmail.sonic.net/?_task=settin ... in.filters

3a. Filters cannot be added from main Mail view: (new feature)

It would be helpful if there were a quick Filter option when viewing email, much like you can add a Contact (from the icon next to the sender's address). The Filter creation process would be more efficient than the current 6+ steps (Copy email address, open Settings, select Filters, paste address, change variables, Save). This could be added to the "... More" button in addition to or in lieu of a new icon in the email header.

3b. Filters screen may hide the "Save" button: (layout fix)

In desktop browsers, under certain circumstances the black "Save" button in Filters becomes partially or completely hidden under the lower half of that panel (blue area where existing Filters are listed). I have seen this myself on multiple occasions as well as by other Sonic customers who asked me for help.

This can be affected by the browser's Zoom setting, screen size, resolution or other dynamic elements. For example, on a screen with 1440 x 900 resolution, at 100% zoom Firefox clips the lower half of the "Save" button. No scroll option is present for that cell/panel. Other zoom settings may also obstruct or even hide "Save" (which I have seen).

Could this be fixed by defining extra space at the bottom of the Filter creation panel to allow for the "Save" button?

3c. Existing Filters are stuck in the order they were added: (new feature)

This is the lowest priority item on the list... It would be helpful if the Filters order could be rearranged, perhaps alphabetical, by domain or with buttons for "move up" and "move down. This is NOT a significant issue, but as filters stack up over time it becomes more challenging to manage.

4. Graymail from mailbox: (new feature--link to existing Graymail feature?)

Graymail/Spam is normally handled prior to being dropped into a user's mailbox by SpamAssassin, etc. However, it would be very useful to have direct access to the Welcomelist (whitelist) and Blocklist (blacklist) features from the mailbox. So this would mean the ability to add a sender's email address to the Welcomelist or Blocklist directly from the mailbox, similar to the Add Contact function.

The "Graymail" folder within the mailbox does not appear to be very useful.

Thank you for reading this. Hopefully these tweaks can be done in a future update. I believe they will help make some webmail features easier to use. However, nothing here is critical or breaks functionality (except occasionally the Filters "Save" button).

Items 1, 2, and 3 can be solved by using an email program (aka, "client") on a computer or mobile device.

There are many email programs so you may have to try a few until you find one that fits your needs. Many people are happy with the programs that are placed on their devices by the manufacturers. Others look at alternatives, such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mailbird, Spark, and Twobird.

Many of these programs allow you to configure them to meet your preferences for how the mail is displayed and organized. You can also consolidate multiple mailboxes and integrate calendars and other tools.

You are correct. However, Sonic Webmail is a mature option that is already deployed and in use. It can provide more complex mail interaction than many mobile apps and is ready-to-use on any device with a browser and internet connection.

This post was created 1) in the interest of discussing possible improvements and 2) was requested by the Sonic team that I add it here.

Many of the items above are certainly "wishlist", but I would put the most weight on #1a (visual indicator of group email), and #2 (modified status text during searches). Everything else would be a refinement of features that are already present, but currently require more steps to complete.

OTOH, a lot of people would argue that web mail is a basic interface to one's mailbox. It's difficult to implement a tool that can meet the diverse needs of a large community like Sonic's customers.

Besides the fact that everyone's needs are different (and sometimes conflicting), it is a challenge to develop something that works on all browsers on all platforms. The code gets pretty complex to ensure that all the users have the same experience.

I'm also puzzled about your first suggestion. When I view an email in web mail, I see a list of names after the To: and Cc: headers. If I reduce the width of the window, the lines will wrap so I can still see everyone one addressed by the email. If I view this on my phone in portrait orientation, I still see the list of names.

As far as the expanded headers, web mail is showing the original email as it was received. It's a general rule that mail processing doesn't modify the headers of a message, and any new headers add added at the top of the original email (not inserted part-way through).

Oops... You are correct about the primary headers showing when the LEFT triangle is activated. However, To and CC are only visible when you manually expand the primary headers each time signing in to Webmail. I have edited 1a to be more accurate and removed 1b completely. Thank you for catching this.

I don't have that experience. If I have time tomorrow, I'll see if I can send a redacted screen shot of what I see. For example, I don't know anything about the triangles that you mention.

For clarity, here are some screenshots of what I am talking about in item 1a. The first is the default view for email headers with everything compact. The red arrow is highlighting the control to expand the primary headers (NOT activated):

The second image is when the top, left triangle is activated, expanding the primary headers. The red arrow is highlighting the control to expand the FULL headers (NOT activated):

Finally, the third image shows both headers activated/expanded: primary (top, left) and FULL (top, right below the buttons):

I just figured out why we're seeing different things.

When I view an email message, I "open" the message (by double-clicking) and see all the significant headers without having to take any action:
Full Headers in Full Message.jpg
Full Headers in Full Message.jpg (162.14 KiB) Viewed 64814 times
I realized you might be using preview mode, where you can click on a message (without actually opening the message) and see part of it, including the abbreviated headers, like this:
Abbrev Headers in Preview.jpg
Abbrev Headers in Preview.jpg (19.53 KiB) Viewed 64814 times
I don't use preview mode. However, when I tested it, I can click triangle #1 and I see the full list of recipients:
Full Headers in Preview.jpg
Full Headers in Preview.jpg (44.31 KiB) Viewed 64814 times
I can't answer why clicking the triangle doesn't show you the full set of recipients like it does for me.

The behavior I'm seeing in preview mode is pretty consistent with other mail programs. I've not seen any that show full details within the preview, as that is expected from the "full" mail view.

Also, you can ignore the highlight on the headers in my screen shots. This is the only message in my mailbox currently that has multiple recipients, but I have it marked in Thunderbird for follow-up. Sonic web mail recognizes T-birds tags and shows them..

Ah... So it appears the default is to show expanded primary headers when opening email in a new window (or double-clicking an email from the List so it fills the window, except for the mailbox/folder list on the left). So the header issue with multiple recipients occurs when email is viewed in a preview pane.

If you set your mailbox Layout to either "Desktop" or "Widescreen", both of which use a preview pane for viewing email, the compact header is used by default. THAT is where the left-side triangle appears to allow for expanding the primary headers. When I open a group email either by double-clicking it or in a new window, it appears identical yours, virtualmike.

I will correct my original post to reflect this.
