Hi - can anyone provide some basic reading on UPS for fiber.

From what I can tell, the fiber stays active in a power outage. So if I have UPS for the ONT and my router / wifi, the system should remain active in a power outage. Is that right?

The OLT (ISP) side needs power--that's what provides a fiber signal. There's a good chance Sonic will have backup power on their end. When fires were raging several years ago a friend was affected by a PG&E PSPS. Their ISP (Comcast in their case) end had no power even though they have battery backup at home so they couldn't get online.

Last week our house had an outage that lasted for less than 10 seconds. UPSes took care of the transitions.

It depends on the outage duration and battery runtime of your UPS. I sized my UPS to give me at least 1 hr of runtime for all my network gear. Power outages are rare in my location but this gives me time to connect my portable generator during prolonged outages. If I'm not home my equipment shuts down gracefully within 5 minutes of the battery expiring. It also provides surge protection/voltage regulation/clean power during brown outs, etc. In other words a decent UPS is well worth it.

In the Berkeley hills we've had around a dozen power outages in the past few years. We have had Internet as long we keep the ONT and the Sonic WiFi/Router powered. In our case we do this with a generator/transfer switch setup for a handful of breakers within of the house, and haven't bothered with putting a UPS on the Sonic equipment.
