Hey there,
I am starting to set up my home Networking Cabinet and started running wires to the locations where i plan to hard wire. i just had a few questions if yall can help out with. I am still new to networking. and if there post that talk about this subject please link them.

I would like to know if anyone has recommendations for an Ethernet Switch. I heard TP Link and Netgear were good systems.

Can I use a 1 gigabyte Ethernet Switch with the 10 Gigabit fiber? or should i just fork out the money and get a 10-gigabyte switch?

This setup is for a home network that will be used for Gaming, streaming, Smart home automation and lite internet usage. I am switching from Comcast i just want to have everything ready for the tech can just plug and set up. and for i make the switch faster.

Any info would help alot.. THanks in advance

You can use 1 Gbps, 2.5 or 10.
1 Gbps will be cheaper and you may not see the difference; most devices will not be using more than 1 Gbps.

I have had good results using used professional gear instead of new consumer gear.

For example you can get some 24 ports gigabit switch on ebay for $35.

Get a 1000 foot spool of cat 6 cable and some connectors and wire your whole house!

Yes, you could use a 1G switch. Unless you're transferring a lot of data on a regular basis on 2.5G or 10G devices then I would save some $ by sticking with 1G until the 10G switch prices come down and consumer options increase.

I would also consider whether you plan to implement vlans to separate your networks. This is a little more advanced but its always best to separate IoT and other untrusted devices from your trusted devices. If so then consider a smart switch. Ubiquiti makes some affordable prosumer switches that are easy to setup and manage - especially for those new but interested in networking. If not and you want a flat network with little configuration then a dumb switch would be the way to go.

Speaking of switches, I have a spare TP-Link T1600g-28ps smart switch and a 16 port Cisco dumb switch that I'm willing to sell. If interested pm me.
