A Few Pre-Install Questions

Hi folks! Sonic is currently working on bringing up 10 gigabit fiber in my neighborhood, and in anticipation of the install I'm planning to pre-string some fiber so that I can place the ONT inside my networking closet. (It's a long run through an attic that I wouldn't want to ask an installer to handle.) I have a couple questions I was hoping folks could vet before I order the cable and crawl around in the attic ;)
  • I know we'll need a box on the exterior where the drop comes in and is then coupled to a fiber patch cable that will connect to the ONT. My hope is that I can bring a simplex OS2 single mode SC/ACP cable to the spot I'd like this box, along with a coupler, and that the other end of my provided cable (in the networking closet) can be where we install the ONT. Will a Sonic installer be OK and/or able to work with this?
  • Otherwise I just want to confirm that simplex OS2 single mode SC/ACP cables are what I need to work with the Sonic equipment. I know I've seen other posts to this effect on the forum, but wanted to verify for whatever Sonic's rolling out for the 10gig installs.
Thanks in advance for the assistance! Excited to get 10gig going in the next couple months.

We should be able to accommodate that set-up as long as networking closet is accessible for our installer to get to easily, to my knowledge. See post by our CEO Dane here : viewtopic.php?p=63811&hilit=SC+APC#p63811

The only grey area to be mindful of is that typically Sonic would cover everything up to the ONT in the case of maintenance and repairs (since typically it's our cables being used up to that point). However since you'd be using your own cable, if something goes awry and requires maintenance, we likely would not be able to fix it (assuming the cable is ran inside the walls) without running our own cable to replace it and possibly relocating the ONT.

It could also create the situation where things are either underperforming or failing up to the ONT at some point and leave us unsure whether it's a problem with the internet wiring, ONT, or external wiring forcing a dispatch to figure out what's going on. If it ends up being an issue with your home's personal wiring and not ours, then you'd most likely be charged a dispatch fee for it. Where as, if it was just our cables/ONT that had an issue, the dispatch would be free.

Kind regards,
Brandon C.

Hi jhattersley,

I had a similar situation when I had fiber installed at my home. Instead of running fiber, I ran a flex conduit from my networking closet to the attic location next to the junction box. The installer was then able to quickly pull the Sonic-provided fiber patch cable through the conduit to the ONT in my network closet.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll likely have to take on that risk--it's a weird trajectory for a single pull and I'm actually planning to pull each end separately, with the attic in the middle. I'll think about alternate routes in the meantime though.

One more question for folks (and I appreciate your help): what’s the minimum conduit size for the fiber drop from the pole that Sonic brings over? I’m exploring an alternate route that might allow for a short distance conduit run that I could pre-string with a fish line for the Sonic installers. Thanks!

The fiber that comes in as thin as a phone line.
