Like everyone else I get a slew of spam mails but today I received a really disgusting one. Aside from tossing it into the spam folder or delete folder as I do the others, is there something more drastic I could do on this one?

I wish someone could write a program or whatever that one could "return to sender". I know, the sender's address is probably fake but just the idea of flooding his/her internet/mail provider with returned mail might lead to some sort of retribution.

Unfortunately, email has a lot in common with physical mail. The return address on an envelope could really be anything, and doesn’t actually indicate with any verifiability where the letter actually came from. And the same goes for the delivery of the message. Do you really know that the real US Postal Service mailman put the envelope in your mailbox? Really could be anybody. Same for spam email.

Unfortunately simple mail transport protocol (SMTP), the protocol for interchange of email, was designed before the idea of spam was even considered. A and a viable solution has not been found in the more than four decades since the first spam was sent. SMTP has certainly evolved, and many improvements have been rolled out, but no one has come up with a complete solution that would quash spam once and for all, while preserving the ability for anyone to send a message to any address on the globe without cost.

And still the soft porn rolls in. Boobs mostly. It started in earnest about a week ago, and I currently don't have the brain power to work out something at my end. It started suddenly and I half expected Sonic to plug the hole sooner than this. Yes, I can delete it, but it's really offensive.

Do you expect sonic to read your email, apply some rules to decide if you will find it offensive and decide if they should deliver it or not?
Do you expect the post office to read your mail and not deliver mail that they think you will find offensive?

No, but once an individual had decided a post was offensive to them wouldn't it be nice if there was a way to stuff it to the sender? Not possible, I know, but sometimes you'd just like to fight back.

Betty, thanks. All these emails had similar characteristics, subject and content. I assumed there might be some way to target them and block or send to spam.

i don't use sonic for my email so i cannot comment on the experience.
Sonic is already doing something to address spam. See https://help.sonic.com/hc/en-us/article ... 7-Spam-FAQ

You can also have something on your mail client that will put what it thinks is unwanted in a separate folder so if its too aggressive, you will be able to find some desired email there.

Blocking unwanted emails while letting through the others is an art.

While the options for filtering out these kinds of messages are limited due to email address spoofing, you can go into your Sonic Membertools "blacklist" section to reduce the number of emails that get through.

For example, if you are receiving spam messages with a specific subject line with something explicative/inappropriate. In that case, you can add that to your blocklist subject field, and it will automatically block any emails with that word/phrase in the subject line from reaching your mailbox.

You can find this section in your Membertools here : https://members.sonic.net/email/spam/we ... t_subject/

Hopefully, this will help reduce the number of emails reaching you.

Kind regards,
Brandon C.
