Upgrade Fusion IP Broadband Residential FX1

Back in February 2020 I upgraded my old "Sonic DSL Fusion Broadband - X1" service to one running over AT&T fiber and is now billed as "Broadband Residential FX1". The service is capped at symmetrical 60Mbps. It charges $50 plus $16 modem/ata rental fee per month. Now days AT&T offer 500Mbps for this cost or $55 for 300Mbps. I rang support and tired to upgrade my service with Sonic but was told under the older grandfathered plans there is no path to upgrade and that I'd have to quit service to get a faster connection. Do I really have to go back to AT&T to get faster service after happily using Sonic for 10 years?

Unfortunately, the information you were told is correct. Due to the nature of the service, you currently have (Fusion IP Broadband FX1) AT&T's system will not allow Sonic to upgrade to the IPBB-F service without first cancelling the Fusion IP Broadband FX1. This has to do with the way AT&T registers the line in their system and the cancellation process has an up to 30 days turn down window.

So, while from Sonic's side we can expedite the cancellation of your service internally AT&T will still have an up to 30 days turn down window on their side after we do so. Due to this factor whether you decide to cancel your current Fusion IP Broadband FX1 and re-order with Sonic or go directly to AT&T that up to 30 days turn down window will still be relevant.

Whatever direction you decide to go in this 30 day turn down window is going to cause unavoidable downtime. We are working hard to expand our own fiber network to as many areas as we can to prevent situations like this.
