Troubleshooting Router config on a fusion DSL line

I've got a TP Link router sitting behind a Sonic supplied SR515AC gateway.
Its been working for about a year, then abruptly cut out. I've tried everything to restore it, but getting some odd results, 2 sonic phone techs have been unable to help, referred me here. I've confirmed that the connection works perfectly with the SmartRG.
When I connect to my supplied router, it pulls an IP, routes traffic for about 1-2 minutes and then cuts out and the router shows the "No Internet" Light. Every.Single.Time.
Smart RG at 192.168.42.1
Router at 192.168.0.1
Things I've tried:
> dynamic IP Configuration, Modem assigns router traffic via DMZ.
> dynamic IP modem in bridge mode, router grabs an IP directly from Sonic.
> Switched service to static IP
> Swapped Ethernet cable between the modem and the router
> swapped the router itself (slightly different version, but both TPLink)
Each time the TPLink router (confoundingly) gets a signal for a little while, and can even route traffic to devices below it - for a little while - proving Its set up properly enough to get assigned an IP - but then cuts out.
WHY: I would like use our router to enable use of a VPN for remote troubleshooting, and to ensure consistent equipment is used across a number of sites we manage.
