The situation isn’t quite that bleak: mainstream browsers indicate that
http:// pages aren’t secure, but they still open. Your question is reasonable, however:
https:// is now expected for all websites, not just those handling sensitive information or accepting payment cards.

In 2018, the answer (from Sonic employee Joe M.) was that HTTPS was a feature of an extra-cost Sonic service called Custom Hosting. I don’t know if that’s still true; you could ask
support@sonic.net.
