So I was thinking, can anybody tell me what those little icons next to a web address in the address bar in the browser are called?

They don't have to be .ico format. They can be png or any of a number of formats.
I made one yesterday by taking a png file (161x172) and resizing it with Paint.NET (a free windows program) to 16x16 and giving it the name favicon.png Works like a charm. Much better than trying to create one by coloring pixels one by one.
BTW, I'm using a Drupal to host sites on sonic.net. Don't think that makes any difference.
