Gigabit FTTH in Foster City, CA?

I currently have Sonic's gigabit FTTH service in San Francisco, but will be moving to Foster City on the Peninsula in the fall. I'd love to be able to keep this level of service (which has been amazing for the past 8 months I've had it), but it doesn't look like FTTH is yet available at the address I'll be moving to. I've seen some press releases about Sonic's expansion across the Peninsula, but haven't seen any specific mentions of Foster City.

Does anyone know if there are plans to expand gigabit FTTH into Foster City? Thanks!

I spoke to a rep today who said it is not available but they will let me know when it is. No indication of when I guess. Currently only Comcast is available and as you can expect it is abysmal.

Not yet, sorry to say. So far we have deployed or announced fiber to the home in the following locations:

Sebastopol
Brentwood
San Francisco
Berkeley
Albany
Kensington
Emeryville
Oakland (Northern)
Burlingame
Petaluma
South San Francisco
San Bruno
Millbrae
Redwood City
San Mateo
Belmont
Hillsborough
San Carlos

...I think that's it. Clearly, we've got a long way to go, but I'm proud of the progress our teams are making on expanding the network and deploying services for consumers and businesses.

Hi there,

Apologies for bringing up an old thread.

I've been a Sonic customer for the past 3 years and would love to continue giving my money to Sonic. However, I've noticed that Sonic is not available in the neighborhood I will be moving to in San Bruno. I've seen some residents mention they have access to Sonic internet in other parts of San Bruno. Knowing this, is Sonic still continuing to expand in San Bruno?

I would love to have Sonic fiber internet in my neighborhood and would spread the word about it to my neighbors. There is unfortunately little to no (reliable) internet options in my neighborhood and I would want to avoid having to utilize the city's abhorrent internet services that is apparently in the process of being sold to Comcast.

Today we serve a huge portion of San Bruno - but limited to the areas with aerial utilities.

Any insight on the City's plans to sell the old cable system? It's possible we could use that conduit to build fiber, if it were available to Sonic.

From what I understand PGE is working hard to underground utilities in FC. If the work has already been accomplished then Sonic has no right of way for installation.

I have a friend in FC who complains about the existing duopoly and claims so do many of her neighbors.

Although not as easy as it sounds, you may want to contact the city council and ask them to investigate the possibility of micro trenching. Not speaking for Sonic here but it may open up the city to another provider and provide some real competition for that "last mile".

Hi Dane,

I'm not sure what the policy is in regards to posting external links here but the details about the San Bruno CityNet Services purchase can be found on the San Bruno city website (https://www.sanbruno.ca.gov/AgendaCenter). It's in a PDF under "Jan 28, 2025 - San Bruno City Council Regular Meeting Agenda Packet" and starts on PDF PG 101.

This is still news to me as I've been recently (a few days ago) doing my due diligence figuring out what's going on. Based on the agenda meeting, it looks like a LOI was fully executed by both the city and Comcast; however, it appears nothing is final yet.
