We have a Windows Vista laptop that works fine on sonic with a ZTE modem, but fails on two different Pace 4111N sonic routers. The connection, either wired or wireless, always is "Access local only". Does anyone else have a similar problem?

Following YouTube advice, I've tried disabling ipv6 on both the laptop, and the pace, with no effect.
The problem is identical on Ethernet or WiFi.
The problem is identical on two Pace 4111N units at two locations.

Solved, sort of:
I gave up and bought a miniature WiFi USB dongle.
The built in Ethernet and WiFi don't work: the USB dongle is OK.

That's quite odd. Anyone have any guesses about the cause?

I would presume your Atheros WiFi adapter is your dongle and that your nVIDIA adapter is your wired connection?

The interesting thing is the nVIDIA adapter's MAC address is all zeroes, which should not be the case. Look to see if the device's properties in Device Manager shows if it's set to some odd value, resetting your computer's BIOS to defaults, or you can override it in most likely the Advanced tab under something like Network Address. It would be wise to use nVIDIA's prefix 00:04:4B:..... http://hwaddress.com/?q=nvidia.

From experience with a (slightly broken) network card with an all zero mac address; some DHCP servers don't like that. Definitely worth trying to find a setting for that. Shouldn't need to use the NVIDIA prefix; anything unique on your local network should be good (but the first byte needs to be even or bad things happen).

It is been a long time, but I have to wonder if removing all of the drivers and then rebooting and letting the hardware wizzard run wouldn't fix this.

Some nVIDIA-based notebooks also run hot and if your NIC is anywhere near the graphics chip, or if the notebook's vents are clogged with dust, this could be a symptom of a failing/failed NIC. A relative's nVIDIA-based notebook has his problem but the issue was with its WiFi adapter.

The nic works fine on the ZTE modem, it is not a hot or flaky NIC. And while the wired nic is 00:00:00 the wifi is 00-1F-3A-26-9D-F7.

I tried removing the drivers and rebooting, nothing changed.
The nVida driver does not appear to have actually removed itself, but the wireless card certainly did.
The USB dongle though, works just fine.

With the Pace unit, do neither the built-in wifi nor wired Ethernet work from this host?
