I'm getting repeated calls (7 so far in the last 3 days) from what must be a spoofed number (1-650-555-1212) showing up in caller ID as DIR ASSIST CA. No one speaks if I answer it; just silence and the line drops about 10 seconds later.

Area code 555 in the North American Numbering Plan is reserved for Directory Assistance applications. I spoke with a representative who answered at 650-555-1212 (which is Level 3 Communications directory assistance) who confirmed that they do not place outgoing calls from that number. This confirms your suspicion that whoever is purporting to call you from that number has less than legitimate reasons for doing so. I added the number to our blocklist, which only prevents incoming calls from that number. So if you need Directory Assistance you can call (Your area code)-555-1212 for help, but they won't call you!

It claims to be a call from a company called "Freedom Mortgage" claiming they purchased the home mortgage and just need to verify some personal information.
"You can look up online to confirm this"
That's the name of a real company in the business, and that's a real number for the company
A request to "verify information" without having provided prior written notice of taking over the mortgage is illegal.

I suspect it's a phishing call using a fake caller-ID number.
There is a whole block of 92## numbers identified as used by Freedom Mortgage, which apparently does a lot of cold calling and trying to get people to refinance their existing mortgages -- so ???WTF

Another call from "Benicia". These are the most prevalent of all the calls I received previously. I was surprised to see it appear again. Number is 400-5168. I think that calls from just the city/county/state/whatever should be permanently blocked by Sonic as spam. No legitimate call I have ever received comes from just a city/state!

Ok, put all the spam calls together to date. Again, I don't believe any legitimate call would come from a number that only shows the "town, state" they are calling from. All of them are robocallers or spam callers.
400-5168
400-5352
205-5873
435-625-1148
541-539-8332
Union City 510-240-7302
Please consider the above calls for addition to your spam list. Again, all calls received at my home, with just the city, state have all been bogus!

That is how we set up the caller ID for the phone lines we provide (SANTA ROSA, CA for example), as do other telephone providers in many cases. That being said, if you receive repeated spam calls then by all means report the numbers to us here. Thank you!
