Fusion price increase and fiber expansion

Well crap. I just got done changing two AT&T accounts over to Sonic FTTN and now I see this. As a member since 1995, I was hoping to keep Sonic for all my 3 accounts but now I may have to rethink this. I have to agree with what others are saying about supporting fiber for others when it will never benefit me. What really pisses me off the most however, is not the increase, but rather the modem rental fees. Maybe you should think about eliminating those fees once a reasonable profit has been made on them.

I think that if they could make a "reasonable profit" on FTTN at all without the rentals, they would've, but obviously that's not happening even with the rentals, so they're raising rates.

I've been with Sonic for about six years. Have known about and respected them for longer. Less than two years back I was happy to learn that FTTN would be an option since my 3 mbit speed was not enough. I have been very happy and do want to support Sonic.

We are planning to move out of state next year so I don't want a new commitment, but otherwise I would be doing the research to switch over to DSL Extreme most likely. That level of price jump is just not something I can feel good about, especially with all the prior words about the historic trends of greater speed and lower pricing.

As an Oakland resident, I am a bit resentful of subsidizing fiber for SF. I am pretty sure Oakland will get fiber shortly after the sun turns into a red giant.

And it is laughable to take credit in the announcement for "features" like faxline - which has been in permanent "beta" status for years, and is utterly, totally nonsupported. Just like my IPv6 tunnel. Oh wait, fiber customers can't even have that!

I too am not thrilled about the price bump, but there are 2 important items to remember:
1) The SF project is getting all the publicity because, it's their biggest project, and it's in the public realm. I know of at least three other communities that are either very close to fiber or already have it.
2) Sonic can not publicize other projects until they are actually stringing fiber. Dane was pretty clear, in his post, that other communities are on the pipeline.

Look out your window. If you have telephone poles, you know your $10 aren't going to waste. I have underground. I have to wait for the city council to approve micro trenching.

Hearing this announcement validates my decision to jump ship to Comcast Business Internet a month ago. I'll continue to miss Sonic's fantastic customer service and user privacy policies, but it isn't price competitive for basic internet in non-fiber areas. The time for a large fiber rollout was a few years ago (as was seemingly promised).

With uncapped FTTN, Sonic voip & Directv Now streaming...we're still ahead by a thousand bucks a year vs. the Comcast Digital Starter, AT&T landline and DSL we used to have. We're here to stay.

While I'm still a fan of Sonic I have no problems with people who want more speed and go back to an ILEC.

People who are on less than 6 Mbps should seriously look elsewhere in lieu of this price increase. Sonic is only obligated to expand where it makes business sense and these individuals shouldn't take what Sonic is doing personally--it's only business. They need to consider what's the most important attribute of their internet connection. At the same time, they should be mindful that it's nice they have at least one other choice, and hopefully in most cases more than that. A lot of folks in the US don't have that luxury.

Don't have a problem with slight increase if the service remains stable. But going from 38 MPS to 6 MPS every Sunday during prime time viewing is ridiculous. That's not the service I signed up for. Wait times during service calls takes upwards of 30 minutes. That's unacceptable!!

And so we see yet another chapter in the continuing saga of "One Price for All", regardless of the service delivered.
DSL subscribers now pay a tax for fiber beneficiaries.

I expect this type of nonsense from government, not the private sector.
