Caller id HGVC is the Hilton Grand Vacations.

An actually somewhat useful "who called me" number, but with a catch: it will tell whoever owns the number you checked on that you called them. So, it'd confirm someone's home at your number, which is what a lot of spammers want to know.

So I dunno if this is useful or not. Maybe with outgoing caller-ID blocked it would be a better tool.

This is the website:

whocalld.com -- type in a number and it gives you some actually useful information.

I tried it on my own number, it told me my name and location (which none of the other "who called" sites have done, they've just offered to let me pay for the information).

BUT -- then the phone rang, once. I checked _that_ number, and it was from the "whocalld.com" website.

So it had gotten the info it displayed by ... um ... I don't know how. From Sonic maybe?

Say, would someone at Sonic try using a number that has outbound Caller-ID blocked
check that number with the whocalld.com site?

We don't block outbound Caller ID normally.
I tried changing the phone setting to block outbound Caller-ID

That must not be what "whocalld" uses as it still identifies our number, but the home phone didn't ring this time like it did yesterday

I don't know how that works -- whether the site is keeping a database, or checking fresh each time.

Curious if someone at Sonic can figure out if "whocalld.com" is a good resource or yet another data profile collector

"Daniel" from "Windows Service Center" called for the umpteenth time today. I told him my number is on the federal Do Not Call registry and that he needs to remove it from his list. "Do not call this number again." "I will call you again and again and again," he replied. "Do not! It is against the law!" His reply: "I will call you all the time, over and over again..." and he was still talking when I hung up.

The caller ID information gets sent to the terminating phone company, along with a bit set to indicate the number is "private." The terminating telco is supposed to honor that bit. Some of them do not. In other cases, the company is registered as a CLEC, so it gets that information. "whocalld" could fit either category.

Please block the following number, from which I have received 4 recent calls, leaves no message and the one time I answered, nobody was on the line:

I've been unable to discover how to register for this forum. I wouldn't mind joining, but I can't figure out how.

This is a complete SCAM! They want access to your computer in order to retrieve person and financial information.

When they ask you to hold the Windows logo key and press R it allows them access. They will flash a message stating that they are from Windows to dupe you into thinking they are legitimate. DO NOT DO THIS! Your computer is now compromised and they will be able to STEAL Your IDENTITY. They also use other phone #'s 1-512-477-0300 and 607-363-9777.

Please BEWARE. They were rude to me as well since I asked the man to repeat what he said since the connection was so poor. I told him if he yelled at me one more time I would hang up. And I did. Only use Tech Support that You call not the ones who Call you out of the blue.
