Yes, they wanted the access code and MAC address. I thought it was strange, too. Although you can change the access code, you can reset it by using the embedded access code in firmware shown on the sticker (through the I forgot the password link). I guess AT&T needs that to get into the gateway although I would presume they should have access since I can't imagine these routers not having TR-069 (and their extensions) even if it's not shown in the web page we have access to. Unless AT&T manages the devices through http and a list from an Excel spreadsheet...
Yeah, a representative from ATT enterprise accounts visited my parents this morning, ostensibly to check the install, but my dad says the guy ran his checks, and then duly noted the MAC, IP address, and admin access code for the RG located in their house. Backdoor or not, someone at ATT is keeping track of this info.

Stuff like that just makes me realize it really is important to set up your own router and VPN solution of some kind if you truly want to have some degree of confidence that your home resources are secured from the outside world.

My IP has not changed in a month, and this is through several reboots of the ATT device.
