You say you are working closely with the city but then a few pages back you said there's uncertainty around the time frame for permitting and activation in west Berkeley. I would imagine working closely with the city means you have insight into the process so you could provide clarity and certainty.

If the city is moving slowly, making things difficult, or not providing necessary information so you can give us accurate predictions, then we should contact our representatives. This is an important issue. Access to information is a fundamental human right at this point and they need to know that their constituents care about this so they can prioritize it.

I'm familiar with local building and planning departments taking their sweet time approving permits and other aspects of the building/planning process and I have observed that direct intervention makes a big difference with respect to how fast they get things approved.
My guess is that the first set of permits was issued before the folks at Public Works realized Sonic’s splitter cabinets don’t comply with an obscure, but official, city policy concerning pole-mounted telecom equipment. They let Sonic go ahead with the work that had already been permitted, but they can’t issue the remaining permits (basically covering the area S. of University and W. of Shattuck) until either the official policy is changed or Sonic comes up with an alternative plan that complies with current policy. Negotiations around one or both of those alternatives may be what Sonic is working closely with the city on. Or something like that. That’s my theory, anyway.

I don’t see the harm in contacting your city councilmember (and a recent Sonic status update encouraged us to do so), and the same goes for the mayor, but Dane has discouraged us from engaging directly with city staff on the subject.

Another voice concurring here.

Sonic has written "we're working closely with the City" and (paraphrasing) 'no need to contact City officials, we got this' on one hand. And on the other hand, it's repeated 'sorry, it's out of our control, we can't predict anything. You'll just have to wait'. While I appreciate Sonic's desire for residents to not be hassling City officials, the contradictory messages don't sit right with me as a long-time resident and homeowner here (not to mention an - up til now - enthusiastic Sonic supporter). Meanwhile, our fellow residents to the north, south, east, and even to some extent the west, are seeing vigorous construction and service activation.

If there is a bureaucratic holdup because of something in the specifically affected neighborhoods (and which areas, exactly, are those? Can't seem to get an answer about that), residents at least have the right to know what it is and why it's specific to only Central/West Berkeley. Is it the boxes on the poles? Something else? Is it something that public opinion or input would, in fact, help push forward?

I'd love to give Dane and Sonic another chance to explain, but without any information we will naturally turn to inquiring with the City ourselves.

I'm sorry, I don't have any new certainty on this. For the region South of University and West of Shattuck, we do not have permits at this time, but we are working closely with City staff in hopes of having the permits issued. And at this time, we don't think that having people contact the City would be productive, and I do think the City staff understand that this is important and they are well aware it's causing delay.

We'll keep you posted when this is resolved!

Happy Friday! Fiber distribution area "Puma 16B" in Berkeley is LIVE!

Puma 16B includes Regent and Bateman Streets south of Webster St to Woolsey St, and between Woolsey St and Alcatraz Ave from Regent St. east to College Ave.

Ok, but what are the pending permits for? Are they for the pole boxes or something else? Why hasn't this been an issue anywhere else in Berkeley?

It's not just the lack of construction that's frustrating, but the lack of information about why, and why just that area.

That said, it's still great to see more and more of Berkeley -- and the Bay Area -- getting activated.

@Dane So does that include Woolsey or is that another FDA area? Wasn't quite sure from reading that

In a post on Nov. 5, Dane wrote, “We also have regions where the City would like to review the aesthetics of the passive fiber optic patching cabinets that go on the utility poles, and we are negotiating that issue too...” viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6760&start=70

Later, on the same page, he replied to a query about fiber availability in Poet’s Corner by saying, “No, that region is still awaiting review of our splitter cabinets, see above for detail on that.”

I’m pretty sure this is about pole-mounted cabinets.

Can you give me an update on the 1900 block of Oregon street in Berkeley (near Berkeley Bowl), please? I signed up for Sonic in December of 2017, got an estimated connection date of November of 2018, and I'm still waiting with no real updates other than the generic multi-city status emails. People way north of me got connected months ago, and it's great that people a little south of me are getting connected now, but all I've seen in my neighborhood are ATT trucks and ATT fiber. Comcast is worse than ever. It's very depressing.

Help me Sonic. You're my only hope.

gmg, I think you are in the area of Berkeley that is in limbo due to ongoing permit issue. See posts above.

How soon after an FDA area goes live do Sonic customers get an email letting them know they can set up an appointment? The sonic worker I talked to yesterday one block away from my house said we should be live already or live very soon.
