Did it again. I've been at this computer browsing all evening. Came back to Webmail -- and it wanted another login.

As for selecting multiple messages, I really like this Webmail's shift-arrow. Hold shift while using the arrow to scroll down over the series of messages you want to delete. (Spam messages usually come back to back, as do messages from email lists.) Much easier than mouse and click, mouse and click, in those little boxes.

New gripe - I can't self-bcc in the new webmail application.

I like having copies of all my sent mail on my computer at home, so when I send email from the webmail, I (usually) will bcc: myself. I then get a copy of my sent email so I can download it onto my home computer(s). I just sent an email from the new webmail, replying to an email I received. I added my email address as a bcc: on the reply. It doesn't show up in that account's inbox, either in the new webmail, or the old one, or on my phone.

Even more odd - it took about 45 minutes for the copies I bcc:d myself on to show up in my inbox, but when I send them from nutsmail, they show up almost instantly. That was last night. Testing again this morning, it took about a minute, which is about how long it took a test email to show up at Gmail. Did you guys fix something, or was there a transient glitch last night?

I really still hate this new one. I have about two to three inches to read a message or see a picture. I don't need one of those giant laptops to do my work. I'm thinking gmail.

I also think it is "bad design" to let large amounts of garbage into my devices and then delete it instead of preferably deleting all that garbage as far upstream as possible. Sonic is as far upstream as I can reach. Just better to delete junk on the host before I bring down the good stuff, don't you think?

If you've configured the account as IMAP, all the large attachments should remain on the Sonic.net servers until you explicitly try to open them.

The principle behind IMAP is that the messages remain on the server until they're explicitly moved to the user's computer. The iPad mail app works in that manner (although it can be configured to get the first few lines of the message). So, if you use the iPad mail app in IMAP mode, the messages are not transferred, just a list of messages, which you can then mark for messages to be deleted.

The POP3 protocol can also support this, though not on the iPad. On other computers, a mail program in POP3 mode can be configured to fetch a list of messages, then let the user mark the list for download and/or deletion.

To summarize: one is NOT required to use webmail to prune spam from a mailbox without first downloading it to the user's computer.

Since most replies go on top of the body of the email, shouldn't the default setting put you there instead of at the bottom?

That's how I set my preferences! I don't know why the default is otherwise--perhaps that's the way it's delivered out of the box?

I didn't know that, Mike. Thanks. So if I only change the account setting in my iPad from POP3 to IMAP that will just download the sender name, recipient name, and subject? Yep, that would provide all I need to clean up my email. Do I need to change ports or change any other settings?

Resolution, OS? Do you have the preview pane turned on or off? Are you viewing the message in the preview pane or in the full message view?

It's a shift in conventions. Us old-timers are accustomed to quotes going at the top of a message, so that questions and responses can be read in a more natural top-to-bottom format.

e.g.:

But why would anybody think that's bad?

When you you reply above the content you are responding to.

Generally speaking the best behavior (in email) is to simply not quote at all. The top-quoting convention was developed for use in sporadic and public discussion venues as opposed to one-on-one private communication where you can reasonably expect the reader to already fully understand the context of the conversation.

Better check your sources. Top-posting with all previous messages below in the same post, is the standard for business. In forums you may want to trim so as to unclutter the forum.

In one to one , when having a back and forth discussion about details of a product or arranging a meeting time etc, it's quite important to have all the previous discussion right there in the same message, instead of having to look up differnt bits of info in different messages (all of which probably have the same subject header!).
