Did you call Sonic I am pretty sure you can schedule to have X2 installed in one visit if you do call them and tell them you want X2 ... I never ever had a problem with the X2 installations one phone call was all it took and the order was placed ...

The migration from ADSL2+ to VDSL2 is a "frame re-wire", it's all done in the central office. And, that's one discrete workflow, and it needs to be completed before we can assign a second port on that card, deploy a new pair, etc. So, I'm afraid for now at least, it's two processes, two support interactions, etc.

Over time, as we continue to streamline operations for efficiency, we may take up merging these two processes into a single work flow, but for now our teams are totally booked up with other work around FTTN, Fiber, etc.

Dane, thanks for the clarification. From what support said it sounds like if you qualify for VDSL2 you have to do VDSL2 first before you're allowed to get X2, even though the expected improvement with VDSL2 is small (~4Mbps) and X2 is large (presumably ~18Mbps, my current rate). So I guess I'll get that started? Or maybe I can just convince support to skip me right to X2?

I'd suggest going to VDSL2 first. It's got no additional cost for you, and it will be faster. Then once that's done, contact them to add the second line, X2.

Isn't there a small additional cost? I believe when I switched over to VDSL2 support said the modem rental would be something like $9 or $10 per month. I think this is more than the old ADSL2+ modems, but I was using my own anyway, so it's $9 or $10 extra for me. We can't use our own VDSL2 modem at this time, right?

Equipment and wire plan fees range from $6.50 to $9.50 for residential consumer products. For an on-net product (terminating on Sonic's equipment as opposed to AT&T's on the Fusion FTTN service), you could use your own equipment and choose to opt out of the equipment rental and the wire service plan. This would limit support's ability to troubleshoot and remotely update, and you would pay a fee for some types of technician site visits, but there's no technical reason you couldn't use customer-owned equipment.

For those of us who want to buy our own vdsl modem and are <4,000 ft, is there any modems that are supported? I don't believe we can buy the Pace 5168nv sonic.net sells ourselves as it requires a custom firmware. So far this is one of the only modems I have found that might work and is available for sale.

ZyXEL Q1000Z

Thanks!

The only problem that I can see with the ZyXEL Q1000Z modem is that there might be settings specific to CenturyLink that are locked. ZyXEL P-871M and Huawei HG610 both run Broadcom chipsets, which should be compatible with the equipment at the central office.
Disclaimer: I have not tested these modems.

Hi,

I just recently got my new Sonic Fusion installed and my connection is 1083kbps up and 14783kbps down. My ZIP code is 94010 and I would be interested to switch to your faster VDSL product.

What is the process and does it cost more than my current service?

Thank you.

Call support at 1-888-766-4233 and say that you want to upgrade to VDSL2. They will check if you are eligible for the upgrade and put in an order. They will send you a Pace 5168N modem. A activation date will be given to you once you contact support for the upgrade. Once you get the Pace 5168N, you can setup the modem since it is ADSL2/VDSL2 compatible. You will lose sync for approximately 30 minutes (or less) while AT&T switches you from ADSL2 to VDSL2.

Price will be the same. $40 for service, $6.50 for modem, and phone taxes (varies by county).
