Eventually it's likely we will have numbers in the LA area. When that occurs, you could turn off the Bay Area number you select now, and re-activate and select a local number down there.

Thanks for the new fax feature.
I sent a scanned document to a regular fax machine as a tets and found that the characters are quite "ghosty".

Pete, received faxes are sent to the configured email addresses as pdfs. Initially, the were OCR'd as well but I was unable to get the OCR software to work reliably and so that feature is currently disabled. Hopefully, we'll be able to turn it on again because it's a great feature to have.

I have a question for you: I work in Healthcare, for which there are very strict privacy guidelines called HIPAA regulations. Occasionally I receive faxes that contain protected health information elements. With a regular phone line fax, the information is not stored in any media and therefore not retrievable by unauthorized entities. My question is, if I use this new fax service with Sonic, I assume the faxes go through your server and are converted to a PDF file - so does the protected information leave a "footprint" in your server which potentially could fall into the wrong hands? Actually, aside from healthcare privacy issues, if I fax something with my social security number or bank account info on it, what are the risks? Thanks.

Nothing's free in water world, especially numbers. What's the catch? Is this a service you are testing out only to charge later?

I use Dropbox to save attachments, which is not exactly local I know. Some can also be saved in IBooks, or using other apps like FileApp. I currently don't generate any PDF's on IPad, but there are some apps for that.

It does not appear that you have a faxline setup. We've made this a pretty simple operation. Go ahead and surf to: https://members.sonic.net/fax_rx/, click on add new fax line, select a number and an email address to forward faxes to, and then click Add FaxLine Service. This should be all that is required to get your new FaxLine Service up and running.

We're a telephone company now, so the cost of numbers isn't too bad. We don't anticipate that every customer will activate a FaxLine number either, so the cost isn't very great.

There are also cases where we make money with the service. If an office wants one for every employee, which is a great configuration for realtors, title companies, lawyers, etc, the fee is $4.95 per FaxLine beyond the first one.

And finally, if a customer departs the Sonic.net Internet access coverage area, they can retain services which are free with their account, on a standalone basis. For example, they can keep their Personal Web Hosting ($5.95), their FaxLine ($4.95) and their email boxes ($4.00 per block of 4).

This allows customers moving to Timbuktu to maintain continuity for these services, and also allows us to sell them at a profitable price point.
