What will be the upstream speeds? I'm very close to a node (<500 ft) so should be able to get whatever the maximum speed is.
The X1 version of the service is up to 18Mbps downstream, up to 1.5Mbps up. The X2 service is up to 45Mbps down, 6Mbps up.

Will this automatically be upgraded speed wise when that particular vrad/fttn gets the 17mhz upgraded hardware that supports 40 x1 /80 x2? (I have had some reports from att line techs that some vrads in my area have already received that upgrade and they are rolling out new signal testers to support the 17a profile.)

I feel the same way. I am willing to pay $6.50 monthly for essentially insurance against modem, phone and wiring problems in lieu of paying $150 for a single service call. I do recall that when I was getting POTS from ATT, they charged something like $5/month for inside wiring plan.
Incidentally, in California it is the landlord's responsibility to provide a telephone line in good working order. Tenants should not have to pay for service calls (CA civil code 1940/1941). Obviously not relevant if you own, but many people do not.

I am too but you're going to be capped at that speed tier.
The more I hear about FTTN, the more I'm 'satisfied' with my current legacy fusion.

Landlords are required to provide only one jack. If the jack is not where you want to place your gateway, you are SOL and would need to put down copper to the room you want the jack to be in.

As for the speed tiers, I am actually disappointed. I wanted to switch to the upcoming FTTN option, but it's not that big of a speed increase for me, so I might just wait for sonic fiber to roll into my block.

I'm supposedly the first one to have to cancel my X2 order :-( since the internal wiring isn't working for the second line. Apparently AT&T (or maybe the landlord) cheated and split the existing cable between two units instead of stringing a new line from the pole... And my landlord sucks and won't fix it. The grey box on the pole across the street is a monstrosity as well.. Oh well, moving to excelsior soon anyway (closer to the CO this time!)

You could be living right next to the CO yet still have a 2k-ft loop. As far as I know, Onondaga (415061/SNFCCA06) area has horrible F2s.
