Get a preterminated single mode fiber of the length you want, terminated in SC connector APC end face on both ends. Buy a fiber click cleaner for SC connectors.

Once you have the cable, run it where you want with the dust cap still installed.

Since you most likely don't have a fiber inspection scope, blind-clean the jack and fiber (even new fiber cables could be dirty): Remove the old fiber from your ONT, use the click cleaner on the ONT's fiber jack. Do it (press to click) 2-4 times. Now clean the new fiber cable (same number of presses). Insert the cable.

Do the same on the termination box.

Most of what I've seen in this thread are consumer grade routers.

What about rack mounted routers?

That's what I'm interested in!

I'll build a router / server combo if I have to and slap in a PCIe SFP+ NIC card, that way I can then grab a switch that also has SFP+ to get more ports for all my wired devices.

That way I can separate the Wifi access point functions and not rely on one device to do ~3-4 tasks.

I've been running Qotom devices as routers for years. They're inexpensive and reliable. I currently use a Q20300G9 (with the Atom C3758R CPU) mounted in my rack. It has 4x 10GbE SFP+ ports and 5x 2.5 GbE ports. Probably overkill for almost everyone, but it goes for $200-250. It's able to forward packets for me with a full set of firewall rules at over 9 Gbps. It's even available through Amazon.

You can run whatever routing OS you want on it; VyOS, Pfsense/OPNsense, OpenWRT, RouterOS, etc.

Sharing my set up here:

- HP prodesk with an i5-8500 with an Intel x520-DA2 PCIE card running OPNSense.
- QSW-M2116P-2T2S switch
- Clients are running a mix of Mellanox connectx-4 25gb cards and Intel x710.

Getting about 8Gb up/down on the router and about the same on the clients.

Which SFP+ transceiver are you using to connect to the ONT and have you had any issues with it? I've read that the SFP+ ports on this device are low power and should only be used with optical transceivers.

I was almost decided on the UDM, but I'm really interested in the ability to have a decent amount of memory and the flexibility to run whatever I want.

I currently have several of these HiFiber 10 Gb SFP+ modules in service, as well as a couple by 10Gtek. I don't really know anything about the companies, but the parts work (at least in equipment that's not vendor-locked), and cost $33. They definitely run warm, but that seems to be the nature of 10Gbase-T.

I'm using a 100 Meters, 10Gb SFP+ to RJ45 Modules, 2.5G/5G/10GBase-T Ethernet Copper to SFP+ Transceiver for Ubiquiti UF-RJ45-10G, Plugin 10Gb SFP+ Port, Low Power Consumption on my Alta Labs route10.
Runs fairly cool. I think any of the ones that support 100m run much cooler.

I run the ASUS BE-92, TRI-Band Router capable of 10GPS. I bought it at Best Buy with discounts for $190.

If this is the RT-BE92U then it has one 10 Gb port and four 2.5 Gb ports. You can only use 10 Gb for WAN or LAN, not both.

EDIT: I wanted to see if this device supports VLANs and it appears it doesn't except for isolating wireless clients. The manual is unusual in that it links back to the Asus website making it impractical as an offline reference.

If someone wants to make full use of 10 Gb service from Sonic, they may want to consider something else with at least two 10 Gb ports.
