605-560-0673 : I didn't pick up, they left no msg. I called back, phone Co. msg of "sorry, your call did not go through", so invalid phone #.



408-827-3076 : I didn't pick up, they left no msg. I called back, phone never rang (I waited 20 seconds and tried again, same), so invalid phone #.

Because some of the numbers are valid, I just don't recognize them. These are generally my wife's old friends from around the country - I don't want to just blindly block them.

That doesn't always work.

When you block your number before calling, the Sonic switch sets a bit in the metadata that includes your phone number to say "this is a private call." The number still is transmitted to the CO serving the called number. This is the way the protocol works. The CO serving the called number should only send a "P" to the called number's equipment, which will then display "Unknown caller," "Private caller," or whatever else it is programmed to do.

Unfortunately, in some cases, the CO serving the called number is owned by the entity who answers that number. In that case, your number would still be delivered. Unfortunately, you, as the caller, have no way to know who owns the CO.

Even knowing that was possible, I still got bitten by it a few years ago, and I certainly was shocked when the person answering the phone knew my number, even though I'd blocked it. In that case, I wasn't dealing with a scammer, so no harm, no foul. Had I been calling a scammer, however, the results might have been different.

Me too, four of them today (9/6).

Also getting calls from 510-379-7008. I almost answered since it's an Oakland number and I live here but the call attempt didn't last long enough.
