Find a cheap m.2 or sata drive you've got laying around (ask the IT team at work?), install your ebay 10G card and pfsense/opnsense and carry on.
Use that HP PC as the router?

Yes. Add a 2-port RJ45 10GBe PCIe card, and install pfSense. That's my plan. There are smaller machines, but for $70 + $50-60 for a 10g card and an old hdd/ssd/NVMe, it's not a bad start.

Be very, very careful buying 10G cards on eBay or even Craigslist. A lot of those cards are knockoffs of questionable origin. If you do take a chance, be sure there's a return policy and verify the yotamark before you install it in your machine. If buying off craigslist, you should be able to verify the yotamark before handing over the cash.

Can I buy the HP Elitedesk 800G3 Mini instead? The SFF is too big.

Can the 800G3 Mini upgrade with 10Gb card?

Per https://www.hardware-corner.net/desktop ... 0-G3-Mini/ it lacks a PCIe slot.

It has M.2 PCIe x4 slot.

Can use M.2 slot of 10Gb card?

The M.2 slot is for a WLAN card. Besides that, there's no external opening for a PCIe card.

I just found out you can't use a Netgate XG-7100. For whatever reason, they don't support SFP+ RJ45 modules. Thankfully, I found this out before I pulled the trigger on a used one.

There is M.2 to PCIe riser.

How about thr Lenovo Thinkcenter tiny M720Q or M920Q?

It seems we can use the pcie riser for those models.
