I've had the same problem today, so I'd just like to thanks to cdkeen for posting the solution.
Switching to "Classic" did not work for me. I got the following error message. Sonic said I should post here. Any advice is appreciated.

If the log indicates the pre-backup procedure did indeed complete then something prevented BackupBuddy from updating the database such as an misconfigured caching plugin.
