Im not sure I can come up with a reason for preferring dynamic over static. Anonymity? Easier to setup?
Cost. I don't really run any "servers" per se, but sometimes I like to be able to reach my home network from elsewhere. Not anything I'd really need a static IP for, just like knowing where my network is on the internet :)

Get a router that supports both DynDNS and has VPN capability.

You can have a dynamic IP address, but your router will update your DynDNS host name when your IP changes. Then, you can define a VPN on the router that you can access from your remote machine to access any device on your internal network in a secure manner.

I figure a credible dydns service would need a windows/mac client so I've discounted the possibility of doing this for the time being.
Assuming the common case is a single IP issued from your DHCP server, could you not do a fully server-side dydns and get rid of the need for us to run *any* clients? I imagine you already track what IP address each account is given, so just whenever a new IP is issued, update the dns info from your end?

edit: I bet I'm assuming too much here, as you likely have plenty of customers with domains through you, which do not reside at an IP Address served by you as well.

It would be much easier to just provide a static IP. Dyn DNS is a hack.

I just signed up for Sonic's Fusion service for my office. I think everything will be great, except I have an existing line that I currently use for my fax machine. In a perfect world, I would like to port my fax number to Sonic & be able to send and receive faxes via the internet. Any possibility of doing something like that?

Thanks,

Our free FaxLine service should serve you well with one exception: we don't offer the ability to port in an existing number. This can be inconvenient if you have got your current number published on stationary, etc. My only suggestion is to begin using a new FaxLine number, and gradually phase out use of your old number.

You can find FaxLine in the "Labs" section of the Member Tools.

Just brainstorming...

How about a syslog service that's tied to our shell accounts? RADIUS server? I don't want to dedicate a typical box to run RADIUS but have dabbed with zeroshell as a VM.

For confidential stuff I would probably not rely on these services but for something QND I would use it--just like FAX even though if there are anything with my personal info, I should not use a 3rd party for FAXing. I can see if there's a RADIUS server, I can provide that for guest WiFi access.

That sounds like a request for micro server vms, or something along those lines, where a user could run their own services. (Albeit, with very limited resources.)
