Hi,
I have a blog at this address. http://bnoble.users.sonic.net/wordpress/ I was using too much bandwidth as it is growing so I got a domain name. Http://www.bobseyes.net. I purchased a value package for my new site, I think it was called.
I was told to install wordpress to the new site folder, which was bobseyes.net in the same directory as the old blog site.
So I did this. Then I ftp'd the old site blog folder to my hard drive . I then uploaded all the stuff in my old site folder into the new folder, bobseyes.net, replacing what was in there. I'm not sure I should have done it that way?

So, I got some help from support and they directed me to the Wiki on moving a wordpress folder.
The directions there must be for older versions or something as they directed me to go the wordpress dashboard and change the url address in there, but, it was grayed out and would not let me do this. The problem here is all the old stuff in the old folder all has stuff pointing at where the old stuff is using this path, so it has to be taken care of somehow when the stuff gets put in the new folder and it sounds like this should all be taken care of if it all goes right?

The end result is I now have two folders with my site in them, the old one and the new one. And the real problem is now all the stuff I try to post to the new site, gets stored in the old site and the new site dashboard is still in the old site folder.
The good part is my blog readers still can get to my blog though both addresses, so I'm still rolling.

The problem is how to straighten this mess out? I'm thinking that if I dump all the stuff in the new site folder and reinstall wordpress in it, this might all work right with the dashboard and posts stored in the old folder and not in the new folder?
However, that might leave me with the new url for my site not finding the old site folder?
It seems I need at least something in the new folder to get to the old site folder, but I'm not sure how this all works? The site has a lot of pictures in it, so I do not want it stored in two places.

My searches on this subject haven't turned up any solved solutions for the problem yet?
And advice or help in fixing this up would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

There are certainly a few metaphorical wires crossed, but it should be relatively easy to fix your blog. What you'll need to do is go into Member Tools and change the hosting directory for bobseyes.net (https://members.sonic.net/websites/hosting/dir/) to the same directory as your old site. (/home/WWW_pages/bnoble/wordpress/)

Once you've verified that works, you'll need to edit the wp-config.php file - the value you need to change is the WP_SITEURL to just "bobseyes.net/". This should fix any remaining issues.

If everything works after that, you can delete the directory set up by the newer Wordpress install (/home/WWW_pages/bnoble/bobseyes.net/). Please either reply to this post or send me a private message so I can clean out the remaining back-end cruft from the newer install.

Hi, Thanks for the input. I changed the directory as advised and now bobseyes.net points to my old web page, not to my new blog. When I went back to member tools to change it back, there wasn't an option to do this.

So now, people trying to get to my blog with bobseyes.net go to my old web page. I can still get to my blog with the old directory address, http://bnoble.users.sonic.net/wordpress/ . How can I change this back?

I've been evaluating how things were working before I made this last change and they were mostly working. People could get to my site using either address, bobseyes.net or http://bnoble.users.sonic.net/wordpress/ and I could post with live writer with no problem. All the new posts and dashboard were still being stored in the old directory,
http://bnoble.users.sonic.net/wordpress/, so despite my earlier post, things didn't seem to be as big a mess as they are now. The only thing that doesn't work is the wordpress editing in my browser, but since I use live writer, that isn't of much concern. Could I use things this way or isn't that the way to do it?
Thanks for your help,
Bob

I did some reading on the .htaccess file and decided I may have made an error when I added the stuff to correct the error that said I needed a later version of PHP on the server.
I did make the changes Joe advised before I did this.
So now I have things going ok as far as I'm concerned. My bobseyes.net takes me to my blog as well as the old address, http://bnoble.users.sonic.net/wordpress/, so that's good. My Wordpress folder is external to the bobseyes.net folder, but they say it can work that way, so ok. And my old web page still works too.
The only other problem I have is my Wordpress edit function in my browser is not working, but I hope to find an answer for that at WordPress. I use Live Writer so that's not a big problem either.
Thanks for your help Joe.
