OK, late to my (maybe) final post on this topic. My install was two weeks ago. It went like this:
My house is on a cul-de-sac, with a perpendicular through-road (TR hereinafter) on the other side of where my street ends. There are utility poles on the cul-de-sac and on the TR. In my original post I noted that the fiber line was added on the TR.
Fast forward over a year and my fiber drop day came. After consulting with me, the drop team ran a fiber from the TR pole to the cul-de-sac pole and then from that latter pole to the house. This is the pole my electrical and old copper phone line ran from.
On the next day a Sonic Tech came out and installed the ONT in my office, where the old phone line terminated. He then finished the fiber run from the drop point to the point of entry of the old phone line and across my crawl space to the ONT.
So, after two weeks, what's the verdict.
I need a PC, router and switch(es?) with at least 2.5Gbs internet. My speed tests show about 930Mbs downstream and upstream times. This is inline with other posts I have seen, given the hardware I currently use. I have this 10Gbs fire hose running through a 1Gbs garden hose at the moment. But I can't justify replacing hardware to use more bandwidth than I currently need. First world problems.
Fiber was the promise Sonic made to all when I signed up over a decade ago. It took longer than I might have hoped, but I never regretted switching from AT&T. With full Sonic end-to-end internet access (I was previously on Sonic over AT&T supplied FTTN), I no longer feel the need to use the Sonic VPN 24/7.
Lastly, I want to give a shout-out to the drop team and especially to Kevin who completed the install. It was great work all around.
