Hi All,
I am still waiting for SONIC to become available in Silicon Valley of all places. Anyways, I continue to educate myself about the technology and while I understand why the ONT is needed, I don't understand the need to switch back to copper cable inside my home (most ONT's have only RJ45 output ports; no SFP output ports for optical fiber connections).

Looking at Adtran website, I saw the SDX 630 ONT:

https://www.adtran.com/en/products-and- ... 630-series

This seems to me like a very nice solution. Essentially all I have to do is to plugin this ONT SFP+ transceiver into my appliance and I am done.

The question is, are there any plans to support this ONT in the near future?

I wasn't able to figure out if you offer different services for small businesses and if this particular ONT could be offered as solution for those type of connections.

Thanks,
Dragos

Dane replied to a similar query last year at viewtopic.php?t=17683.

I feel the number of folks who could make use of that form factor would not benefit Sonic at this time. I am an individual who could benefit, by the way.

I'm not familiar with the intricacies of PON programming but based on a document that describes how it would work for AT&T the device would have to be reprogrammed with a provider's configuration before it could be used. At this time Sonic's focus is to build out their network and they need to do it with minimal distractions so they could focus on building and not having to support exotic/unusual configurations. Maybe in a couple of years when SFP+ ports are more common in home routers, they could reevaluate.

To not lose all hope, look at how they have changed their policy regarding telephone service. I understand Sonic needed to be a telecom company to have access to AT&T's copper plant at cost--meaning telephone service required. My question here is why did Sonic require phone service when they built their gigabit fiber service, which doesn't require anything from AT&T? @dane, care to provide some insight here?
