I have a 10gb NIC in my PC. I ran a cat 6a cable from the ONT directly to my PC. I can only get around 1200 to 1300 on the sonic speedtest. Is it possibe my PC isn't powerful enough? (Asus z170 with I7 processor and ssd OS drive.)

I don't think the z170 has a built-in 10 Gbps adapter. Did you use a PCIe adapter or on USB ?
What are you using for testing bandwidth, only the sonic speed test?

Hello!

With your Asus z170 being a few years old it might just not be capable of handling higher speeds. If you go into your network settings you should be able to find the link speed your device has and what type of ethernet adaptor you have. Let me know what speeds its capable of handling!

Best Wishes!

Look at the Task Manager during the speed test and see the CPU utilization.

did you actually install the card and do you have a motherboard that supports those speeds?

I installed a TP-link TX-401. It's a 10gb adapter. I installed it into a X16 slot. I used the sonic speed test. I will try speedtest.net.

The adapter is TP-link TX-401 capable of 10gb.

Yes, I installed the card. TP-Link TX-401. The onboard ethernet is 1Gb. I'm not using it.

With a router in line I get 900+ with the CPU maxing at 35 to 40%. However I did this test knowing the router maxes at 1Gb. Tomorrow I will bypass the router and connect directly from the ONT to the TX-401 using a cat 6a cable.

I downloaded Ookia speed test. The results without a router in the line and using a cat 6a cable are 1300+ download and 3500 - 4500 upload. Task Manager indicates a CPU usage in the 20 to 30 percent range. I played with some of the TX-401 adapter advance settings, as per TP-Link support, but didn't see a definitive difference.

Running sonic's speedtest gives much slower speeds, especially on the upload side. I assume sonic's speedtest is web based and Ookia's is an app. I did notice that sonic's speedtest used twice the CPU percentage as the Olkia did. I ran the sonic speedtest in Firefox.

I also installed the latest TS-401 driver.
