is dial up access still supposed to work?

I was in vacation in the sequoia national forest. no cable, dsl or anything fancy there.
The options are hugues net satellite internet or dialup.

Sonic used to work there using a modem in springville, CA whose number is listed at http://www.sonic.net/popf2/
28.8 kbps is better than nothing, right ?

This year after authenticating, once I could ping 8.8.8.8 with a 3 sec round trip. All other times even this did not work.

I called sonic support and tech did not even know sonic ever provided dialup so he could not help.

So is it supposed to still work ?
I understand focus is on gigabit fiber but reliable dial up fallback is useful too.

Yes, dial-up services still work but we are working to discontinue one of the resold dial-up services that we use that we've used for some time in the next few months. This will reduce our dial up coverage considerably but we also have fewer than 10 users still making regular use of the service. I'm sorry the support rep wasn't able to help - it's been a long time since rattling off memorized modem init strings was a key skill.

FYI: The modems in Springville, CA were not working for me (i could connect to them but not to the rest of the internet) last week:

Preferred Dialup Number
Phone Number Service Equipment Location

Are they part of the modems that will shortly not be available anyway ?

Fewer than 10 using any dialup or fewer then 10 using the resold service specifically?
What is the way to know which is which?

There are a few customers that continue to use dialup ppp services today.
