So, is there any way for me to maintain my Sonic based web site now? If not, is there any point to my continuing to pay for web hosting?
We still are maintaining ftp.sonic.net, so files can be managed via FTP through there. Many clients will automatically try to use a secure TLS connection - for added safety, you may want to save your connection settings to use 'Explicit TLS' (sometimes called FTPes), which will make sure a fully encrypted connection is established up front, before any login information is sent.

I have tested the above with both WinSCP and Filezilla this morning and both work as expected.

Joe,

Thanks, ftp seems to work with WinSCP. However, with SFTP I was able to connect to the directory that contains my web logs and I can't seem to access it now. Problem is, I've forgotten the full name of that directory -- it contains "by_user" and I think it's directly under the root directory (though I may be wrong about this). Could you remind me of the directory name so I can point to that path within WinSCP?

Actually, I'd forgotten how to do this as well (I haven't modified my web folders in a really long time, and always did it from the shell account, where I had a shell variable pointing to the right path - I never saved the path in an SFTP client).

OK, so now I know I can continue to maintain my web site via ftp and that's a relief.

This leaves the question of how can I access my web site logs, which I was able to do when I connected via sftp.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The logs should be showing up at /logs/by_user/ (or 'logs' if you have a symlink set up to point there), but it looks like that's not working at the moment. I've reported the bug and am currently working on fixing it - hopefully it's just a configuration option we missed during the recent upgrade of the server.

I presume (please correct me if I'm mistaken) that I cannot use port 22 in my FTP client and I have to use port 21. I don't want to use an insecure connection. If my client doesn't give me feedback on this, how do I ensure I'm not sending my password and files over an insecure connection?

[Edit: Found the setting in patty1's post: "So I changed the connection method to FTP with TLS/SSL and the port to 21, and now I can connect to ftp.sonic.net just fine."]

However, do I use explicit or implicit encryption?

You should use explicit encryption when connecting to ftp.sonic.net.

Yikes, I've been oblivious to this change. I did manage to get my mail folders with decades of mail by ftp, so thank you for that, and now we have to decide if we want to stay with sonic.

Is the .profile file from the shell server gone forever or might I be able to get it sent to me?

Joe,

I see that /logs now appears (it wasn't there yesterday), however the directory is empty. Can I assume this is only because you still haven't completed the fix?

Yes, you can use authenticated ftp to ftp.sonic.net.

I and others have had good success with FileZilla.

Not strictly required, but I recommend you configure it to use TLS/SSL when connecting.
