If the base is removable you can mount it the way I mounted my 2-Wire. Use four plastic mirror clips, four flat-head screws and four pieces of Tygon tubing (or other spacer) to cover the screws. Mount it upright and flat to a wood surface. All of this is available at your local hardware store.
There is no need to modify the unit in any way.
My house has wiring to one phone in the front entry on the first floor... period. That's what you got in 1905, along with the coal stove in the kitchen for heat. So I have a splitter, a wireless modem and a DECT6 telephone there. And an extension cord for the wall warts to a socket a foot too far away. I also have renovation plans... ($$$$$)
